Professor David Playford is an academic clinical cardiologist, with subspecialty expertise in echocardiography and cardiac CT, having founded a specialist cardiology practice, run a subspecialist echo laboratory and an echo core lab, and set up and directed an advanced echo fellowship program. As the Professor of Cardiology at The University of Notre Dame, Fremantle, he runs the undergraduate cardiovascular teaching program and has been awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

His clinical practice is at Genesis Care where his interests are Cardiac Risk Assessment, Breathlessness and Pulmonary Hypertension, Heart Failure, Valvular Heart Disease and Cardio-Oncology.  In addition, he has active development work in artificial intelligence for automated diagnosis in ECG   and echocardiography   systems that has resulted in international awards and significant development funding.

Professor Playford also has extensive cardiology expertise spanning over two decades in clinical cardiology, advanced cardiac imaging, and mechanistic and big data cardiology research. Using this breadth of experience, he is available for advisory boards and to provide expert opinions for the corporate sector and in new cardiac technologies.

He is known internationally for his “big data” research work into areas of fundamental importance to human health – cardiovascular disease. As the founder and chief investigator of the National Echo Database Australia, he has been instrumental in developing a major research program and a collaboration network involving many eminent Australian and International research academics. His work has resulted in a many high-impact publications which are changing paradigms in recognition and management of heart disease, and the design of future clinical trials.
